Meh. I didn't realise Dan Brown wrote under a pseudonym. What little "action" occurred seemed only a vehicle to lead to preachy exposition on religious doctrine. A lot of political and religious diatribe without any thrill to make this a thriller. Also, in one of the most groan-worthy instances of deus ex machina
SpoilerJesus himself appears to give the clues to Allon
.

My favorite parts of the Gabriel Allon books are his interactions with his team. Eli, Dina, and the rest of the gang didn't make an appearance until halfway through the book. And then they were gone again not long after. I missed them. Still good, just a departure from the usual formula.

Status: Did not finish
Notes: I was extremely excited to read this book, as I had heard that it was worth reading. Unfortunately, I kept picking this book up and putting it down! It just did not hold my attention.. I made it to chapter 43/64. I was so close. Oh well. Perhaps I’ll give it another try in 2022.

Really like the concept but found the positioning of Gabriel Allon as a magical superhero sleuth absurd. He gets everything right, people answer all his questions. Would love to find another version of this that feels more realistic.
