The Order

I’m a long-time fan of Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon series and while The Order is somewhat of a departure to his other books in the series, I found there was a lot to enjoy here. The story was interesting, the dialogue was well done and the cast of characters was well developed.

The Order centers around an organization deeply rooted in antisemitism plotting to overtake the Papacy. The story takes us to Venice, Rome, Munich and Switzerland. It is a very thought-provoking story and addresses old and new issues.

While this is not my favorite in the series, I appreciate the incredible research undertaken as well as the chance to have a new visit with the ever-entertaining Allon. There’s continued retirement talk in this book for our hero. It will be interesting to see where this goes. I did miss that there was no connection to Allon's art restoration in this installment. Would welcome more of that aspect of this wonderful character in the future.

Fans of the series will gobble this one up in one sitting or two. It's that kind of a book.

Hahahahahahahahaha (okay, it's not a funny book, but I did have fun reading it).

I'm a big Gabriel Allon fan. I was eagerly waiting for this book. When it finally came out, I was very excited. And now after finishing my the book, I feel a little disappointed. I can think of two reasons. First, I had very high expectations from this book. Maybe I should have kept my expectations a little low? Second, while I was almost 90 pages through the book, I could see where the story was heading and could tell how the rest of the plot would unfold. I missed that plot-and-twists-gripping-me feeling. This could be because maybe I've finally figured out how the author works with the plot for Gabriel Allon and I think it has now become a little repetitive.

I finished the book in three sittings. I didn't enjoy it as much as I would have loved to.

I read this for my book club so haven't read any of the other books in the series. I thought it was fine, not mind blowing, but fine. There was enough information about the characters that I wasn't confused although I probably wasn't as emotionally attached as if I had read the previous books.

WOW! What else can you say when it's July and the latest Gabriel Allon book is released. In an ironic twist, Gabriel manages to save the Vatican and the Catholic Church while supposedly vacationing with his family. How can the most famous (or is it infamous) Jew in the world save the legacy of a more well known Jew from 2000 years ago.
While Gabriel's team shows up to provide a little help this is almost a one man job. I missed Chiara's wonderful cooking and Uzi's complaining but we can't have everything when Gabriel is saving the world one more time.
