UGH. Okay, again, why will people not put pronunciation guides in books?!

This book is perfect for my coworker, Nikki--who has Hispanic heritage and has more of a Spanish repertoire than me with my numbers and colors. Because the text flows SO seamlessly from English to Spanish, I am left to guess just what the phrases in question are. I can make assumptions based on the pictures but here's the thing: that feels like a cultural affront to me. I truly want to represent/speak well when I read out loud. OR I want to learn for myself. This book does not give that opportunity.

Hence why the low rating.

This charming bilingual book goes all through Lucia’s house. We meet her familia and share in all the things that happen in each room of her house. Places and family relationships are explored in Spanish and English. This book is full of the joys of family and culture in daily life. Children will experience the warmth of a large intergenerational family who celebrates their culture.

Picture book, text in a combination of English and Spanish.   Lucia is a happy girl, showing off her cocina where Mamá performs milagros, and her baño where she "shaves" alongside Abuelo. The house is filled to the brim with a large family (los primos de mis primos-- my cousin's cousins) of at least three generations, with roots in Puerto Rico on one side and Spain on the other.

As a picture book reader who speaks and enjoys Spanish, this was a cute story about a girl showing off her home and her family.  But if a reader is not familiar with Spanish, I don't know that all of the Spanish words are understandable by context.  There is no glossary or pronunciation guide, which makes for a more seamless reading experience but also adds to the challenge for English-only readers.

Lucia invites the reader into her home, where she shows us the living room where she makes blanket forts, the kitchen where she helps her mother cook, the patio where she plays with her cousins, and her brother's room and her own room where they laugh together. Lucia describes her beautiful family and all the fun things they do together!

I love the way this book explores two different cultures and how they blend together in one big crazy family. Lucia has family in Puerto Rico and in Spain, and all her cousins and aunts and grandparents come to visit. The text is mostly in English with many words and phrases in Spanish.

Lucia is so cute! She is proud of her amazing family, and has such a playful and happy attitude. She brags that her mother can work miracles in the kitchen. She says that she always beats her father at card games. She watches movies with her aunts, and eats watermelon with her brothers. She pretends to shave a beard while her grandfather is shaving. Every page is an adorable childhood memory!

This book is definitely written for readers who are bilingual in Spanish and English. There are no translations for the words that are in Spanish, so be prepared to look them up if you don't know Spanish.

I loved the colorful illustrations! The art style is cute, and every page is full of interesting little details in the background of the scenes. There is always some family member at the back eating a slice of watermelon, playing with the dog, reading a book, or napping on the couch. So cute!
