It was great to learn some of the history behind my favorite musical and to see some of the cut lines. Anais Mitchell's lyricism is absolutely beautiful and this book really allowed me to fully appreciate it isolated.

Fascinating look into the development of my favorite show. Reassuring and encouraging in how it reflects that things aren't perfect at the start and take collaboration and a lot of revision to get to where they're supposed to be.

i regret shit talking the bway version of epic iii after learning that anais mitchell had a mental breakdown over it and admits to giving up making it perfect… which i do understand but the nytw remains superior

I like musicals, and I do like this one. After seeing the tour recently for the first time live I have grown obsessed to understand the nuances and the way that this plot comes across on stage. (It's set where there is a train station and some sort of early turn of the century miners and workers.)

The joy of reading this book is not only do you get the complete libretto you also get the four various versions of lyrics (or however many) before it was solidified on Broadway.

You can tell that this was certainly a labor of love and that the depth that Anias when through to adhere to the Greek tale(s) and to make them flow on the stage - and to give humility and sympathy to Orpheus - is quite astounding.

I recommend this book as reading when listening to the cast album or, like me, reading after you see Hadestown live.

To the world we dream about, and... the one we live in now!

I found this very interesting and I learned a lot. It was so good I ended up wanting more. More about how certain lyrics came to be. More about what started Mitchell on this whole journey in the first place.

I loved this behind the scenes look at the process involved in writing Hadestown. It was interesting and, to someone without a musical theater background, it was easy to follow. I listened to the original Broadway cast recording, reading the notes on each song after listening. I highly recommend this method as it adds a little more depth and emotion to the book. It doesn’t hurt that I already loved Hadestown, and I imagine anyone who seeks out this book does, too.
