I found some of the comments felt very repetitive and it got a bit boring, but for the most part I found this to be a very interesting look into the development of the show and I wish there were more books like this for musicals. I absolutely love these behind-the-scenes type stuff. I love knowing how things work, especially in areas i know nothing about and that frankly make no sense to me. My brain hates poetry/music unless htere's a strong narrative to it.
I really loved the insight that it offers to all the changes that happened in Hadestown on its road to Broadway! I learned a lot about the show :)

I would argue that this is more of a dramaturgical how-to than it is about lyric writing; although lyrics are present, there is little of the nitty gritty of it. However, the dramaturgical process is discussed in great detail, helped by Mitchell’s forensic attention to change as she shows each song at every stage of development. Certainly a fascinating insight, though not into what it claims.
