Actually 4.5 stars out of 5. Creative processes, particularly long ones like the development of Hadestown, delight, fascinate, inspire, and ultimately, comfort me in turns. As someone constantly wanting to create but never feeling like it’s good enough, reading about someone who feels the same way but labored over one of the most beautiful pieces of theatre to grow in the past 5 years, feels like the biggest comfort in the world. This is an essential read for fans of Hadestown, sure, but also to anyone studying creative process.

Read and listened to audiobook in tandem, taking breaks to also return to the original album, Live Off-Broadway Cast album from NYTW, and the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Book is primarily a collection of lyrics, but it was exciting to get to read Mitchell's annotations on each song and the evolutions across the years and various productions.
I would have liked to have seen greater or more detailed notes in some places to help fill out the piece, but what is here is an interesting perspective into Mitchell's process and that of her dramaturgs and team.
For the audio, I couldn't expect Mitchell to rerecord the entire score or play one of the cast recordings in full, but the choice to simply recite the lyrics of each song in a relatively flat and level tone does not quite feel like the best choice or perfect solution to how to present a work like this for listening.
Overall a very special, if somewhat slight, work on writing and rewriting.
[Audio gets an extra quarter-star for getting to listen to Anaïs personally tell her stories about the creative process.]
