I stopped reading Alex cross. The stories were just too dark. This didn't feel that way, not sire why. Great story with twists
It was so long winded... so much unnecessary details to muddy the waters. It turned out very boring and stale. Did not keep me turning pages. I usually read fast and furious but this book did not keep me turning pages. I lost interest and shelved it twice and came back to finish it to see what’s the fuss was all about. Alas it was such a waste of time.
Lots of twists and turns. I read aloud to my husband while we are in the car; we both were kept speculating as to what was going to happen next. If you like suspense, this is pretty good.

I stopped reading Patterson for a while because I got tired of the graphic violence and repeditative stories. I am glad I gave this one a try. I enjoyed reading another Alex Cross novel.

What I Didn’t Like:
-Missing that villain angle. James Patterson’s Alex Cross series is at it’s best when the villain is DARK and DANGEROUS and we get up close and personal to them in some chapters. I really, REALLY missed that in this book.
-Name dropping old characters. This is the 28th book in the series. I’ve read them all. But they’re published once a year. That means it spans a lot of years and it’s been a long time since I’ve read them (and I reread them occasionally). So when we name drop a character who was important in, say, book 3 … the readers know they’re supposed to know who this is but we DON’T. That can be frustrating.
-Weird chapter cuts. Patterson prides himself on short chapters that end on cliffhangers but some of these were WEIRD. He’s gone from using them as great places to cut scenes to just weird places to cut. The scene continues EXACTLY where the last one left off in the next chapter. You really have no choice but to keep reading or be confused the next time you pick the book up.
What I Did Like:
-Alex. I will never NOT like Alex. At this point, he’s become one of my favorite characters EVER. He’s a genuine good guy. He’s not perfect, but he means well. I will always adore him. That’s how we got 28 books (plus a few bookshots) in and still read everything he stars in. Plus, this series continues to be the only ones penned EXCLUSIVELY by Patterson with no co-writer.
-Readability. These books are always fast, clear reads. You know exactly what’s going on, it’s described well, it’s easy-to-read, and it’s never confusing.
-Mystery is solid. By that I mean I didn’t have it all figured out and it makes sense. Exactly what you want in a detective style mystery story.
-Chekhov’s gun. I won’t tell you WHAT THE ITEM IS (hello spoiler) but I will say there are things dropped in early that come back to be important. You get that satisfying moment of “OH, that’s why he told us about that” more than once.
Who Should Read This One:
-Alex Cross fans, obviously.
My Rating: 4 Stars. Honestly, if you’re a fan of mystery/thrillers you cannot go wrong with Alex Cross. The detective’s stories are always my go-to recommendation because they’re great. This one is classic Cross and it’s good!

While I love Alex Cross and his series, I found this wasn't a favourite novel in the series. I think it might have been because I listened to the audiobook, and the voice didn't match the voice in my head that I have "heard" when I have read the physical books in the rest of the series. Alex Cross is one of my favourite characters and I look forward to reading book 29 shortly.
