The synopsis was boss. I was really anticipating this and the vanishing half I read this and was wildly disappointed and I did not love this and I genuinely can’t find one thing I liked it was a simple plot a simple story and it was overly complicated for what it needed to be I’ve read better

I would give this a solid 3. The writing was good and descriptive. However, I found the story was slow and patchy at times and no characters were entirely engaging. That being said, the concept of mothers in many ways was something I appreciated. Nadia was the most interesting and strong (despite her mistakes) but everyone else was just “meh” and predictable. I found most characters to not have any significant growth (or there’d be growth then to only backslide into bad habits). One to two characters, sure, but damn near all the characters? C’mon now. The church ladies commentary only served to highlight the gossipy and insincere community that an organized church can be. All in all, an interesting, albeit overall sad, read but it won’t leave a lasting impression on me.

Beautifully written but I felt the voice of the Mothers was lost with the omniscient narrator. It was good, but I kind of feel like I'll forget about it in a year or so.

There was a lot that I liked about this book. I enjoyed the developing and changing relationships between Nadia, Aubrey, and Luke. The other characters in the book added a lot but didn't take over in any way. I thought the writing was very good and I loved that, unlike most mainstream books I've read, being Black was the norm and the only time the race of an individual was mentioned it was to introduce a white character. It was refreshing.

I wish the book had ended differently and I wish the narrator of the audio book had sounded more natural for the parts of Nadia and Aubrey. The dialogue in those sections was great but the narrative was stiff and the words were over-enunciated.

I certainly enjoyed the story and would even think about reading it again at some point, but with my eyes.

Hmmm. This book had all of the things: suicide, losing your mother, teen sex, teen pregnancy, abortion, giant secret keeping, hypocrite church leaders, cheating with your best friend’s husband, being your parent’s caregiver, leaving your hometown to desperately try to start a new life, child rape, PTSD, infertility... Sweet baby Jesus.

All of that said, I’m looking forward to another book from this author. Maybe the next one will have mostly nice things?
