I enjoyed reading this until the end which felt too rushed like the character limit was being reached.

DNF at page 278 (outta 401).

I tried. I really did. I finally got to the point in the book where things we supposed to be ramping up but seeing how much more I had left I just don't care.

The good:
-The prologue was gripping and that is what kept me holding on for so long because I wanted to get to that point in the story where it actually happens.
-There was clear differences in the writing between the POV which made both characters feel unique.
-Clearly the author is passionate about mountaineering.
-There are interesting elements to the story.

But despite all of that, I find the main character annoying and it just has taken too long for anything to happen. So many chapters could have been cut and it wouldn't have affected (what I have read of) the story. The prologue was the best part so far because it gave us an eerie feeling, a mystery, and action right away. Even the mysteriousness of the first few chapters weren't that bad. But then it just drags. It's possible the rest isn't so bad but I am nearly 300 pages in and I am dreading reading this. I can only make a few pages at a time cause I just don't care.

Loved how creepy this was! However, I do think there was a lot of repetition so I did get bored with  parts of the book, which is why I skimmed through the last 100 pages. I did not mind the different points of view, some of them tied real well together at the end, but Sam’s inner dialogue confused me most of the time. He redeemed himself in the last 100 pages, where he felt like a real person going through all the motions, unlike the first 300 pages where he went through different phases of a stereotypical gay persona you’d find in older movies.

I…what? Wow.

If you don’t enjoy cosmic horror, you won’t like this. If you have trouble picturing the story visually in your mind, I feel like you’d struggle with this the way you would with ideas in Lovecraft’s writing.

I’m going back and forth giving it 4 or 5 stars, let’s call it 4.5. Having the mountain as the thing possessing the main character is so interesting, there’s no demon or spirit of some evil human, it’s literally the mountain! I loved that there was not even a HINT at a person being the cause of the mountain being evil or being otherworldly. We think of evil/haunted places and usually they are that way because xyz happened there, but this place is just scary all on its own.

I also didn’t find Sam annoying at all like other reviews I read. Sometimes people aren’t like us…so you may not like the way he speaks or things he says but that’s kind of the whole point of a character in a book…that it isn’t you lol.

Anyway, loved it. Big cosmic horror fan and also a huge fan of bad things happening on mountains.

Not for me, I don't think. While I found the main cast fine, there is a *lot* of metaphors that feel overdone in the book, and nothing happens for many, many pages except expounding on those metaphors. At the core, a very good book, though!

Interesting storyline, but got a bit repetitive. Sam’s POV was the best and most entertaining part by far.
