This is a good read, if a little short - even for a Maigret. I like the ending, the fact neither we nor Maigret are sure he did the right thing in revealing the killer. (Of course, as readers, we needed him to)

I’ve marked five stars because to be honest I didn’t see that one coming. However for some reason it took me a while to get going and I could only read a couple of pages at a time before I got bored.
A great story though in the end. A proper who dunnit!

Not one of the worst Inspector Maigret's, but I wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't tell people to avoid it. I have a feeling Simenon wasn't a big fan of Holland and thought it uptight, fake and bizarre. I'll have to read a biography on him to see if I'm right. It could just be Maigret's opinion and not the author's, etc.

This was a really good read. Maigret finds himself dealing with Dutch people (the horror!) with the mystery of a dead husband.
The characters are well drawn. Miagret is a pleasure to read and this book looks closely at the pressures of a small community.
