Not what I thought it was - more of a general overview of the PNW and not really about rain.

Great comprehensive history of all things PNW. Geology, forests, early explorers, native peoples, salmon, mountaineering, winemaking, waterways…
Minor: Racial slurs
Indigenous peoples are referred to as Indians…which some may have issue with.

Disturbing review of environmental history, politics, and science in the pacific northwest. Written in the 90's it is probably not completely accurate. Some situations might be improved, some worse. It was hard to read due to the tragic facts.
As lifelong PNWer, this book was both captivating and horribly depressing. Well written and full of history and information, but the audio version also was full of mispronunciations! Very distracting and nearly cause for abandonment if his stories. Mostly place names, Alki, Puyallup, etc, but the repeated GEOduck really was too much. Narrators, do your homework?
More like 3 1/2 I think. Interesting to read about the Pacific Northwest in the 1980s and earlier, and I learned some things. Also fun to read about places I've been and where I haven't. I've loved other books by Timothy Egan, but this was his first and it felt very male-centric to me. I noticed his use of the term "rangerette" to describe a woman park ranger. Ugh.
Jam-packed with amazing factoids and profound observations, yet retaining readibility, this has got to be the best book about the Pacific Northwest.
This is an excellent book. Timothy Egan shows you what the Pacific Northwest is all about by describing his visits to the places described by Theodore Winthrop's "The Saddle and The Canoe" The first book ever written about the Pacific Northwest based on the author's visit in 1853.
Tim Eagan tells you about the mighty Columbia River, Mount Rainier, The Salmon, Olympic Mountains, The history of Seattle, and the First people here, and clearly reveals the source of the tension that exists in Seattle between the old and the new. The conversationalist and the capitalist. This area of the world contains breathtakingly beautiful scenery, however, the timber industry and the Army Corps of Engineers threaten to destroy it by aggressive deforestation and by killing the salmon runs by damming and drenching the rivers the salmon use to travel to their birthplace.
Very good book. If I could recommend just one book about the PNW, it would be this one.

This was a fantastic source of insight into the biogeography and history of the Northwest. From BC to Idaho, and down to the Cali Border. History from pre-history to 1990 when it was published. Its always interesting to read a book that makes predictions about a region and to see what has happened...
