A loving (and lovely) sketch of PNW history and culture. Certainly outdated in many ways (the chapter on Victoria BC was baffling), but Egan is an engrossing writer who can narrativize literary journalism extremely well. A truly wonderful look at what makes my home such a special place.

Even though it is now more than twenty years old this serves as a wonderful start to looking into the PNW and its history, with a good focus on Native American history & culture and the erasure thereof. As with so many stories that concern what white people have done to indigenous people and their land it is at times infuriating and sad.

My friend gave me this book as a recommendation, so I knew I had to eventually get to it, but I was surprised with how much discussion it created around the taming of our powerful rivers across the world. I have always thought of the power of hydroelectric to be the best renewable energy, but after seeing the devastation that the Northwest has gone through for certain ecosystems, I wasn't so sure anymore.

Boring

Glad to know some of the history and context of places in the PNW that are often under-reported on and misunderstood, but I found this book to be very much a product of its time (late ‘90’s). I was very offput by the author’s choice to retrace the path of Winthrop and how much Winthrop was idolized and centered in this narrative of the PNW’s history. Too much white man’s gaze for me, but still giving it 3 stars since I did learn a lot about the PNW’s history, and I thought the over-the-top descriptive language was kind of endearing. Would definitely be interested in diving deeper into some of the topics that were touched on here, but from an author who has a more immediate/intimate connection to the history.

I want to finish it. Just hasn't been a priority book.
