some in my book group said that the characters were flat. I think it could be a cultural difference. Brits aren't big on openness and touchy-feely. so, the character development is usually hinted at, or seen from the outside. It covers alot of life events, though, doesn't it? i recognized several situations throughout in which i've been myself or known someone else to be. But, the "mommyness" of it was a bit cloying. Not everyone is naturally gung ho about the concept of being a mom.

3 and 1/2 stars--I actually first read almost all the books they were reading in the book--which was totally unnecessary and some of the books were not worth the effort!

Actually didn't finish because I didn't like the road it was going down with infidelity/adultery and abortion, just to name a few.

Can't decide if I like British books or not. This one was fairly fun.

This was a fun book to read. It read pretty quickly. It was easy, predictable, and over dramatic. I thought the idea was a bit of a rip off from The Jane Austen Book Club, but I could be wrong here because I'm not sure which was published first.

I enjoyed later works by the author more (Alphabet Weekends and Things I want my Daughters to Know), but it was interesting to how she handled the same themes that emerge in the later books. There are a lot of characters to keep track of. I found myself flipping to the character guide at the start every time I sat down to read.

British Desperate Housewives, but without the spark. Need I say more?
