This was an odd story. It's described as dreamy and I can see the parallels - a lot of the story didn't feel real but felt like someone describing a dream in a therapist's office. I could just imagine the characters talking all stern or all breathy. The dialogue and the situations felt over the top and I just couldn't seem to get in to the story.

Not as complete as Nightfall but its final 20 pages are more hypnotic, horrible, and wrenching than almost any noir I can think of. Goodis' writing is genuinely lyrical and mythic, caught up in sensation and illusory detail. His books approach a trance-like state.

The tension builds and is maintained for most of the book. The characters’ passions, maniacal behavior and much of the dialog are over the top and overly dramatic - but it’s all part of the genre. I didn’t care for the ending but I enjoyed everything else
