Beautiful beautiful writing. This is a memoir that brings light to lesbian domestic abuse. The honesty of machado’s writing brought me to tears multiple times. I really appreciate the information within this book as well as the tone which seems almost like passionate advice/warnings.

Graphic: Domestic abuse
This book put me into a depressive state for sure.
I will state that this review comes from someone who is not queer and has not been involved in any sort of abusive relationship. Keep this in mind.
I went into this book knowing it was well reviewed and highly praised but I think it had to do with those reviewers able to connect to the story or find something to relate to and I did not. I can appreciate that Carmen Maria Machado states that this book is meant to be about abusive queer relationships and did not want it to be about anything else. With that said, I definitely feel like there were a lot of metaphors or references that I did not know, for example I have never seen Star Trek and there is a whole story referencing it, I was not able to appreciate that. I liked the style of writing she uses and the idea that "In the Dream House" as anything and everything but most of it was hard to understand. This book has beautiful writing but at the same time that writing did make me feel sad like 99% of the way through and there is like 1% of something happy happening but is overshadowed by all the abuse we read about.
My 3 star rating is meant to highlight that this book will not be for everyone but if read, you will read some beautiful writing.

Fix of fragmented, tightly emotional memoir, and research, and literary concept. Very academic creative nonfiction-y. Ever so over wrought, although that is part of the Iowa Writers conceit.
