A great short story collection. I felt like all of the stories were strong in their identity and clear what they were talking about. So often I read short stories and feel like I have no clue what is going on but these stories give you some mystery and hidden meaning but not so much that you feel lost. The stories were darker than I expected (I think I didn't really read the blurb though lol). Many of the stories felt like looking at the past for me and the one about pregnancy and the what if of having a baby resonated with me so intensely. The prose was excellent, easy to understand yet powerful and interesting.

Each of the short stories in Milk Blood Heat are perfectly crafted. The first story, about two teen girls with a strong connection, is an absolute sucker punch and sets the tone for the rest of the collection. Milk Blood Heat is subtle, reflective, and dark. The folks that populate the stories live seemingly conventional lives. However, Moniz ultimately highlights character flaws in each of them to devastating effect. Readers will find themselves contemplating human nature and our most grim impulses. What happens if we say yes to that voice in our head? What if the choices we've made have already set us down a path we don't want? What if the people we trust betray us?

I wasn't prepared for the triggers in this book and that's on me. There are such thoughtful stories and powerful writing here however I suggest that you educate yourself before you jump into this one!
