I wasn't prepared for the triggers in this book and that's on me. There are such thoughtful stories and powerful writing here however I suggest that you educate yourself before you jump into this one!

difficult to review short story collections, but on the whole i really enjoyed this one. the writing style was gorgeous, and most stories delivered in terms of plot/atmosphere/characters. for me, a couple of stories nearer the beginning of the collection seemed less fleshed out or ended abruptly, whereas others, even when not necessarily resolving at the end, were still satisfying. all in all though, a pretty great book! 

my favourite stories: milk blood heat, the hearts of our enemies, necessary bodies, thicker than water, exotics, an almanac of bones

Florida is the setting of these stories, but it’s just background. Background for stories about coming of age, confronting the past, and coming to terms with an unknown present. Every story was excellent, easy to read, but powerful. I will certainly be checking out anything else Dantiel Moniz writes!

A series of short stories that range from intensely dark in a truly horribly real way, to the somewhat hopeful. I really liked it but I wouldn't recommend it if the pandemic has left you too drained for some dark shit
