I found this slow-going, but that may have been more about my life than the book itself. Good story, and it was nice to see the character development in what had been a minor character in the series.

This book is hard for me to review having seen the TV series before I read the book (which rather ruins the crux of a murder mystery), but the prose is engaging and the character work impressive. That I finished it despite knowing the story already is a testament to the quality of the writing.
A slow burn English mystery. I laugh when when I see these marked as a thriller
Red Bones is my favourite Shetland Island book so far. It achieves the perfect balance of “slice of island life” and crime mystery. The characters are more likeable and lifelike than in the previous 2 books. Characters that used to come off a bit annoying are redeemed. It has more of the spirit of the TV show.
Overall, I have no complaints. The mystery aspect is difficult to guess but it keeps you trying to solve it. The characters and setting make it a read equal parts cozy and creepy.
If there is one thing to say, it’s that the writing style is basic. It’s not literary, and mostly it gets the plot across and stops there. This one element stops the book from being 5 stars. But I still didn’t mind it.

A long-held secret comes to light when some old bones are found during an archeological dig in the Shetland Islands. But how can bones from the 16th century cause trouble now? Or are they newer?
Jimmy Lopez is a quiet, reflective detective. Many people assume he thinks as slowly as he speaks, but he never speaks unless he's sure of what he's going to say.
There's a different sort of a pace to the Shetland Quartet books, and it matches the pace of the main character. There's almost a gentle, dreamy, misty quality to them, but then you realize that the plot is actually chugging right along.
Sandy, the sort of hapless junior detective does a lot of growing up in this book.
I know this book made me want to visit the island.

Again, exactly what I’m looking for in a murder mystery series set far away from me. Escape, easy reading, nothing too challenging.
