I did enjoy this book. The story was fun and as it went I got more and more invested to see how everything would pan out.

If you love the original Star Wars movies, the ones with Luke, Leia, and Han, then you’ll enjoy this book. The time line spans the big events that happen in those movies, but from the point of view of a couple young imperial officers. It’s a love story, a coming of age story, and a look into what it’s like to believe in the goodness of the Empire, or any ruling power, only to discover the propaganda is a lie. I enjoyed Claudia Gray’s in-depth character journeys coupled with space adventures. Heads up, the first hour or so was kind of slow, but things pick up when the two main characters get older and go to the imperial officer academy. Also, if you’re a sensitive reader, I recommend checking StoryGraph for content warnings.

Not Ciena explaining away the destruction of an entire planet while simultaneously screaming about her honor at every possible turn…

Also, Nash made my skin crawl.

3 stars for the way the Empire’s machinations and methods of indoctrination were fleshed out. It almost read like a horror novel because, well, it kind of was. Other than that, I really didn’t like the main characters at all and spent most of the story feeling frustrated, especially with Ciena.

I give this book five stars! I will say that the book was bit slow to start and I wasn't sure how I felt about a book written from the point of view of Imperial Officers.  But after the first couple chapters, I absolutely loved the book!  The story was engaging and the character development was amazing.  In fact, I am kind of sad this is a stand alone book.  I would have liked to see more of the main characters in future books.  (I guess this is still a possibility as I haven't read any of Claudia's other books, but...it is unlikely).  Anyway, it was interesting to see the events of the three original Star Wars Stories (episodes IV-VI) from the point of view of people outside of the original Star Wars cast (Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo...etc.).  Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend this to any Star Wars fans.

Come for the tear-jerking star-crossed lovers of Star Wars, stay for the Easter eggs and dot connections.

I really enjoyed Lost Stars from a Star Wars macrohistory perspective. It was really neat to see key events from the original trilogy -- and a bit beyond -- unfold from ordinary people's points of view. The distant third-person POV style made it hard for me to connect emotionally with Thane and Ciena, which was a bit of a disappointment.
