Lost Stars

This is one of my favorite Star Wars books! It isn't about the politics or strategy or epic battles in the way some of the other books are. This is world building on a micro level. If you've ever wondered how countless background characters across the Star Wars galaxy ended up in the rebellion or the empire, this is worth reading. It's really a snapshot look at two individuals and their journey doing just that. I'd also recommend rewatching the original trilogy before or while you read this!

Friends, to rivals, to lovers, to enemies. My heart hurts.

A Star Wars romance set during the Original Trilogy where childhood friends end up on opposite sides of the war. These two are present for every major event in the trilogy, giving you an entirely new point of view for a classic story. This story explores the emotional toll the war takes on both Imperials and Rebels and makes you reconsider the glee you originally felt at the Death Star blowing up when you finally have the names and stories of the countless, innocent Imperials killed at the hands of the Rebels.

We explore the pain and betrayal the Imperials feel when they uncover the truth of their regime. We feel the passion and sacrifice of the Rebels as they throw their lives away for the chance of a better galaxy. We watch as innocents deteriorate into hopelessness as the Empire steals their livelihood from them.

Claudia Gray is a master of writing characters. The main characters go through a tremendous change throughout the story, and the transition from the wide-eyed Imperial cadets to heartbroken and forlorn adults is perfectly crafted. The exceptional characterization extended to every character, no matter how small of role side characters played in the plot, I felt like I knew them and cared for them.

This book was emotional and intense and so, so sad. This story shed a different light on a story that I thought couldn't ever feel new again. Lost Stars was exceptional.

5 stars! Han and Leia take a seat.

Even if you don’t like Star Wars this is a good book, so I shouldn’t have to say much more to convince you if you find yourself in the majority. The book is rereadable-good; get on it:)

Of course, there are a few things that i disliked (mostly the really silly cannon part where they just stopped being friends??? like what????), but they are minor. Overall, i think this is a really interesting perspective to see SW IV-VI from and I'm very happy I picked this up. Being the first SW book I've read, I can say it was great, and it's made me super excited to continue reading more (Thrawn trilogy, here i come).
Though irksome at times, Ciena is a truly unique character, and i find her fascinating, if occasionally irrational. I think Thane was a great contrast, but for me, there wasn't much more to him than that. As a character he was meh. However, I really really enjoyed the plotlines he took part in (quite a bit more than Ciena's). Ciena is more interesting; Thane had the better story.
This book didn't really have an emotional effect on me (not for lack of trying). The themes and morals are very interesting to think about, but i wasn't super invested in the deaths or the romance, it was just intriguing to think about, especially within the star wars universe and with the backdrop of all the events of the original trilogy. i guess i read this objectively more than anything. emotional investment would have made this a 10/10, but i suppose you cant have everything.
SO. yep. really liked. excited to read more.

This was my first Star Wars book and unfortunately I don’t think it was a good choice for a first read. Most of the criticism I have for this book is probably due to me not being the target audience as it is YA which I didn’t know. The plot is predictable and cheesy at times. The characters are likeable and I enjoyed the Star Wars universe over all. The placement of the main characters though feels forced just to show the plot of episode IV-VI through a different POV. 15-20 years ago I would have given this 5 stars.

Full rating: 3.5/5. I enjoyed reading this, but I do think that I grew less interested in the last third of the book. Like the tone at times didn't totally fit the severity of the situation. Also, while I enjoyed the main two characters, some of the others could have been fleshed out a lot more. Especially Nash; I just didn't get him at all. One other thing I didn't like is that the author seems to tell, not show, a lot in this book.
