I would absolutely re-read this in a heartbeat! It was so queer and lovely, and had both a lovely mix of substance and fluff! The romance between agender and nonbinary characters made my heart feel so at ease and seen! I love the magic of it all!

Really pleasant and fun! Got a little tired of it at times, and it didn't always capture my attention, but it was still a fun read!

This YA contemporary with a magical twist follows agender teen Syd, who works at a queer-owned bakery. When Syd goes through a bad breakup and accidentally makes some brownies that causes everyone who eats them to break up, it’s up to Syd and the bakery’s cute delivery person Harley to save the day!

I am a SUCKER for a slow burn friends to lovers romance, and Syd and Harley are now one of my favorite book couples! I loved seeing their playful banter turn into a beautiful relationship — but with a good amount of angst along the way, cause the angst is what makes it fun.

The magic system is soft, and I didn’t completely understand the rules by the end, but I didn’t mind it the way I would with a high fantasy story. The dash of fantasy was incorporated into Syd’s coming-of-age story in a way that really resonated with me.

The book is also set in Austin, and as someone who lives in the Austin area, it was so fun to see Syd and Harley visit so many familiar places!

If you’re looking for a story with a cute romance, thoughtful coming-of-age themes, a magical twist, and tons of LGBTQ+ representation centered around community, I cannot recommend this book enough!

CWs: dysphoria, misgendering, toxic relationship, fatphobia mention.

“I want to be with a person who orders my favourite cake just because it’s Tuesday. That might be my new working definition of love.”

If you are looking for a queer, diverse, fluffy romance novel and has a hint of magic, then this is the book for you.

The characters in this novel are loveable and feel real. We get a love interest whose pronouns change, which is seamless in the novels narrative, and a gender main character who doesn’t use pronouns at all. We have a whole cast of queer characters, but also POCs, from a deaf school, and a polyamorous group.

The reader is along for the ride on Syd’s journey of self-discovery. Syd is seeking questions to answers that don’t feel comfortable to ask, and ends up using the love of baking as a distraction while dealing with this internal battle. While Harley is the sweetest and most supportive person throughout this entire novel. They are always there to listen and give the support and be the person Syd needs. All the characters throughout this novel, feel like people with real ambitions.

I was surprised when the gentle touch of magic was added in. It brought out that idea of “baked with love” to a literal meaning, which was such a charming element of this book. Seeing how Syd’s thoughts and feelings effect the baking and those who taste the delicious treats, was captivating and I loved it.

My only downfall when it came to this novel, was the writing style. In some areas, it was very description heavy, and telling over showing. It was manageable, and didn’t effect my overal experience since the plot made up for it. It’s a personal taste and it didn’t quite fit with me, but still excellent read.

This is a must-read for lovers of YA romance, baking enthusiasts, and those who love a story about self-reflection during big life changes.

Content Warnings: Misgendering by family, dysphoria, extensive discussions about food.

I wanted to love this book, but the writing was overly verbose and, honestly, cringe-inducing at points. I found Syd to be a pretty flat character, and Harley was almost a caricature of a happy-go-lucky delivery person. My biggest issue with the book was that the author seemed a little too concerned with designating characters as AFAB or AMAB rather than introducing and referring to them by their correct gender, which was annoying and made the inclusion of so many genders and sexualities seem a little superficial.

Absolutely obsessed with this book. Was drawn to it for the concept of an agender main character and was not disappointed. I wish I worked at the Proud Muffin.

The variety of characters was so refreshing - I adore how seamlessly Capetta switched Harley's pronouns throughout the book according to what they were most comfortable with at the time. And Syd's experience with no pronouns feeling right was incredibly relatable to me. Capetta's writing style was also so enjoyable - their penchant for baking metaphors reflected Syd's identity perfectly, and made the book feel even more unique. Reading this book made me so happy - the scenes of queer joy meant so much to me and Syd's passion for baking was so endearing.
