Je ne connaissais pas du tout les romans de Courtney Milan et je dois dire que là, je suis complètement sous le charme.
J'ai vraiment apprécié ce livre, et plus particulièrement la personnalité des héros. Ash est un homme ambitieux, protecteur, très dévoué auprès de ceux qu'il aime, en apparence impitoyable envers ses ennemis. C'est un homme marqué par son passé, par son enfance difficile, un homme prêt à tout pour se racheter auprès de ses frères, et leur offrir un avenir à la hauteur de ce qu'ils méritent. Calculateur certes, mais généreux et bon, c'est un homme qui cache des secrets, un homme du peuple qui s'est élevé à la seule force de son travail.
J'ai été très sensible à son comportement envers Margaret. Si au début il est direct dans son approche, il change vite et pose sur elle un regard qui va tout changer. Car pour la première fois depuis longtemps, Margaret va être considérée comme une véritable personne, quelqu'un qui compte. Il va en quelque sorte la libérer d'un carcan, sans savoir qu'il peut mettre ses projets en périls en lui accordant sa confiance. Il se place finalement en position de faiblesse, et jusqu'au bout, c'est elle qui aura les clés de leur histoire commune.
Margaret est un beau personnage de femme, très bien mise en valeur par l'auteur. Elle a une sacrée force de caractère, elle est loyale et aimante. C'est une femme qui prend conscience qu'elle compte, que sa voix a de l'importance, et qu'elle a envie d'être libre. Elle n'a pas une position facile dans l'histoire, dans la mesure où elle se retrouve prise entre deux feux.
La romance est très belle, pleine de sensualité et de délicatesse. La force du lien et des sentiments qui unissent Ash & Margaret est très touchante, teintée d'une gravité qu'on ne rencontre pas forcément dans nos chères romances historiques.
Ce que j'ai beaucoup aimé également, c'est la manière dont l'auteur explore les liens fraternels, que ce soit du côté du héros, ou de son pendant féminin. Loyauté, amour, passé commun, responsabilités ... Courtney Milan apporte là un questionnement qui donne un vrai plus au livre.
Une très belle découverte donc, je me garde la nouvelle incluse à la fin du livre pour plus tard, histoire de faire durer un peu ...

Courtney Milan has a knack for writing characters with real-life vulnerabilities, as she did in [b:Proof by Seduction|6571963|Proof by Seduction|Courtney Milan|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1252559634s/6571963.jpg|6765046] and [b:Trial by Desire|7873953|Trial by Desire|Courtney Milan|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1286657340s/7873953.jpg|11056283], and this one is no exception.
What I enjoyed about this installment is that our Hero is (at first glance) not only physically beautiful and charming, but also ruthless and determined in his pursuits, be it wealth, status, or a woman - all of which place him as a class A alpha-type by Romance readers' standards. However, he is also a man of great character who is loving, tender, selfless (his greatest quality), intuitive, and fragile.
As a reader, I was quickly endeared to him, which was no surprise. Courtney Milan's heroes are easy to love despite pre-conceived standards of position and/or wealth, where men often abuse said status, thereby making them downright dishonorable in the eyes of readers (if not by their own peers). And although this story's hero (Ash) sets out to earn a position of honor in society, he proves (to the reader and to his peers) that status/position does not a "gentleman" define. In fact, he is leagues above them, despite his lack of status, family name, or education. In the process, he earns the love and respect of a woman who originally sees him as her enemy.
I also enjoyed the contrast of the heroine's dual feelings for the hero. On one hand, he is the one who set in motion the events which led her family to ruin. Her sense of duty and loyalty to her family places him as Public Enemy #1 in her eyes. However, his respect, acceptance, tenderness, and faith (in her) only serve to obfuscate her feelings of contempt for him, eventually blossoming into a passionate love which tears her apart as much as it fill her with joy.
Their struggle feels realistic (for their time) and as a result, I really enjoyed how each character's strengths and weaknesses were pivotal to the storyline. That said, Unveiled wasn't a complicated, epic drama, but instead a sweet, romantic love story as only Courtney Milan can tell.

It was fun, and I really loved the H/H. I was also surprised at how well Milan held the tension... I really didn't know how things could possibly resolve well. Great read!

Maybe I've lost my taste for romances. This felt slow and stretched credulity too far. The hero & heroine were pretty decent, I'll likely give the rest of the series a try.

Sometimes romances can be frustrating in that a host of problems could be solved if the couple just talked to each other about the thing, whatever it may be, so it was rather refreshing that the "use your words" portion was directed towards Ash and his brothers (while also recognizing that the words to use just wouldn't have been known).
