This book can be summarised best by saying that it illustrates the importance, fascination and difficulties of an evolutionary approach to human sexuality. Author attempts to get into topics which looks simple and easy but the real explanations aren't. His lucid and simple way of writing and connecting the anecdotes with real life human examples makes it a pleasurable read. In doing so he also conveys some of the fundamental principles of natural selection. If themes like lactation, menopause, sexual signalling etc has puzzled you or made you curious this book is a must read to find answers in that direction.

The first title is misleading. The book discusses arguments about the evolution of sexuality and the differences between humans versus other animal species. I could not find the traces of the "fun" element.

My intention was to get a taste of writing by Jared Diamond. And I think he impressed me with logical reasoning and coherent argumentation.

The book can be recommended to anyone interested in the evolution of sexuality. Have the right set of expectations not to be disappointed.

It was a disappointments. Fun? not at all.
Its basically high school biology and discovery channel. The book offer no sources at all, just bunch of information.
I was expecting some fun facts and history of sex in human society. But there are a lot of biology with seemingly complicated words which arent so hard to get what they meant...
having to say, i still dont know why is sex fun, but a lot of refreshment on my biology from school.

I enjoyed parts of this book. I liked the way Diamond investigated certain areas of human life, such as how males became part of the care of babies and children, and how this is reflected in certain areas of New Guinea. But in saying that, I couldn't really get myself into it. I wanted to- I did, as sexology interests me- but I felt Diamond kept veering into other directions.

However, from an anthropological standpoint, this is a good, interesting book. It doesn't all deal with why humans have sex for fun and enjoyment, but it looks into the development of sex outside of ovulation, and how the idea of family developed.

So a good book, if you're into that sort of thing.

not JD's best work. very very pop-y (which isn't in itself bad; it is genuinely also not written with much care). if you read anything remotely relevant to this subject, there won't be much to surprise you here.

Những câu hỏi tưởng chừng đơn giản nhưng thật ra lại rất phức tạp và còn nhiều bỏ ngỏ

Excellent information, as always, by the author and a very, very easy read. I wish he would have gone more in depth on all topics and tied things together. The book seemed incomplete because of this. In addition, I felt Darwin's theory on sexual selection could have been brought in to compliment natural selection. Overall, very good, but too thin.

If you picked this book up thinking it was a 150 page Cosmo article you sure were in for something else.
Physiological expert Jared Diamond never fails to answer the questions that everyone asks but quickly dismisses. For a book based on human biology Diamond has the ability to make things simple and understandable for the dedicated reader. Sure he's no Carl Sagan, unlocking the secrets to the universe (unless you're reading Collapse, where he unlocks the secrets to the future of humanity), but he is able to choose fascinating subjects and explain them in an engaging way.
Why is Sex Fun? brings up numerous facts that we all take for granted, if you thrust for knowledge and aren't afraid to dive into the deep end of the human gene pool then there's a good chance you'll enjoy this quick and enlightening read.

"Why are humans one of the few species to have sex in private? Why are human females the only mammals to go through menopause? Why is the human penis so unnecessarily large? There is no more knowledgeable authority than the award-winning author of THE THIRD CHIMPANZEE to answer these intriguing questions. Here is a delightfully entertaining and enlightening look at the unique sex lives of humans." (From Amazon)

A nice quick interesting read on comparing sex lives of mammals and animals.
