Not sure if it needed to be a 400 page book but the slow burn was worth it and I absolutely love Adam and Rao.

Convoluted and confusing plot, perhaps because I was so, so compelled (obsessed?) with the characters and their slow burn romance that I was maybe skimming the important bits. The two leads were gorgeous, nuanced, charming, totally engrossing.

Wow wow wow. Not my usual genres or style of book but this sincerely blew me away.
A delicious mix of crime thriller, government conspiracy, and sci-fi nonsense, with a through line pining woven throughout the story.
Rao and Adam are both compelling main characters; their dynamic plays on the common trope of one straightedge character and one who's unpredictable, but it felt like a fresh take on it to me. The develo ment of their relationship was really well handled.
I was gripped and engaged by the plot every step of the way. I am not a fan of military/secret service/spy/government type stuff, but I let the jargon wash over me and just enjoyed the ride. I think thing escalated really well throughout the story, building in ways that felt easy to follow and made sense within the context - even at the end of part 3.
Really glad I read this, it was such a unexpected joy.

Fun, fast read with delightful banter and critical lens on military imperialism and nationalism, along with a thought-provoking (or rather, memory-provoking) Big Dumb Object.
Graphic: Body horror, Death
