Silas Marner

George Eliot

In Dickens' hands, Silas Marner would have been what many people condemn it as: a soppy, sentimental Victorian story of a man redeemed by love. (I'm not necessarily slamming Dickens here; I appreciate him, but I love Eliot much more.) In Eliot's hands, it's beautifully warm and human, without being mawkishly sentimental.

Adorable and surprisingly dark for what the description said. What a baller ending to a first chapter.

It’s been a while since I’ve read something written before 1900 and it is a little slow but feels so good to my soul.

Reminds me a little of Les Miserables with a dash of Dickens and Tolstoy. Altogether, I loved it. Time for me to put Middlemarch higher on my TBR list.

For the first 100 pages or so I was worried I wouldn’t like this book at all, it sprung back and forth between incredible descriptions of characters and details that felt drawn out. But as the plot really continued I enjoyed this book a lot and found myself very invested in the characters. The characters connections and emotions feel incredibly modern for a book over 150 years old.

I had to read this book for class and was shocked how much I enjoyed it. I had to do research also while reading it so that helped me understand it a bit more. I really loved how this was a journey of growth and humanity along with realizing why community and children are so important for our lives. I enjoyed how poetic this novel was and how it touched on how others can see you and taught deep lessons on greed and trust.

I had many moments where I paused and overanalyzed parts of the novel because I kept finding different meanings in just a couple of words. This novel had my brain going and I loved it.

The only explanation for how readable this fairy tale is is that Eliot is a genius.
