Wow that was good. I didn’t enjoy the first bit as much but it was necessary to build up the characters and realistic relationship. I love when books speak to structural issues through interpersonal relations.

I want to give this a 3.75. Very well-written, and an intimate examination of a marriage subjected to the prison industrial complex and it’s injustices. It feels important but I struggled to root for any of the characters. Still- I don’t have to love these characters to recognize and appreciate a work of craftsmanship.

This was like a 4.5 star honestly but this is our book club book and I feel like there are so many layers that when we talk about it it’s gonna bump up to a 5. But omg ate this book up in kinda the worst way like my goodness emotional turmoil around every corner!!

Why should you read this book?
An American Marriage by Tayari Jones was selected for the Oprah’s Book Club and it was longlisted for the 2018 National Book Award For Fiction. It definitely is a solid, thought-provoking and engrossing book.

Celestial and Roy just got married and they are the embodiment of the American Dream and the New South. He’s an executive and she is fighting to become an artist. But, suddenly, Roy is sentenced to twelve years for a crime he didn’t commit. As Roy’s time in prison passes, their relationship grows apart.

When I was reading the Goodreads reviews, I noticed that An American Marriage generated a very lukewarm response which was surprising because I really enjoyed this book. I think I won’t forget this novel anytime soon. An American Marriage essentially deals with black identity, race, the American justice system, love, pain and blame. I think Jones truly wrote a thought-provoking novel and that’s why I think these characters and ideas will remain with me for a long time.

There’s a point in this book where the characters are causing pain and suffering simultaneously but it really isn’t their fault. That really made me think about how this often happens in real life. Sometimes the circumstances are to blame.

I highly recommend this novel! It’s perfect if you’re looking for a well-written book that will be a super quick read. I listened to the audiobook and loved it!

I’d like to thank Algonquin for sending a review copy.
