I adored the writing in this book. It reminds me of both Heavenly Creatures and The Secret History. It's incredible that this is his first novel. I ended up reading this by accident because I heard a recommendation for a different book called These Violent Delights and ended up reading the wrong book but I'm glad I did haha. I didn't absolutely love the way the story unfolded, but I'm a sucker for extremely fucked up protagonists and depictions of toxic relationships.

I read this book on a reccomendation from Booktok and while I finished it I didn't exactly enjoy it. For most of the novel it felt like it was trying to build up the characters to be more complicated or "mysterious" than they actually were. The two main characters reminded me of the preteniousness of Gatsby in the Great Gatsby and maybe that was the point the author was trying to go for but it didn't land well for me.
Finally, the motivation for the murder wasn't clear to me. I felt like either there needed to be more build up of why the main character was driven to commit a murder or a stronger motive - the violence just didn't make sense to me.

I can’t say this is a perfect book — I only just finished it and listened to it via audiobook — but I can say that it is memorable.

Paul, our main character, is a withdrawn and angry kid(only 16–17) going to college with people he cannot relate to. until… Julian comes in. Julian is so different in upbringing and personality but carries the same kind of sadness and loneliness that Paul does. Immediately they click, and immediately it’s obvious that they are terrible for each other. The development of their relationship and the directions it takes never come as a surprise but they still come together to create a haunting picture.

This is not a book with a happy beginning, middle, or end. It is not a book with heroic and happy characters. These Violent Delights is a book where the protagonist and antagonist are the same person.
The relationships and people are realistic in their shortcomings and mistakes and emotions and it is tragic.
