A fun read. Mahalia has a lot of personality. The chaacters so diverse each character looks nothing like each other.
There is a few boring bits that I wanted to skip but there's a bit of tension towards the end.
This book is worth reading.

this was just kinda average. i thought the whole idea of the “coming out” party was pretty cool, but i thought it would have more of a role in the book than it ended up having. i also just didn’t feel the chemistry between mahalia and siobhan. ALSO mahalia’s mom made me want to throw hands a bit, but that also may just be my religious trauma speaking 🙃

⚠️: homophobia, biphobia, racism, outing, religious bigotry, minor ff sexual content, racial slurs (the reading aloud of the n-word in class by a white person), mentions of slavery, alcohol

An enjoyable light hearted queer romance read that left me wanting more.
Mahalia is trying to plan a coming out party, in place of the sweet sixteen her Mother and her were never able to afford. Bills, life, and other struggles stand in her way of having the perfect party, and a new student can't help but steal all of her focus. Siobhan and Mahalia were so cute together, I just wish we had seen more of their relationship and how Siobhan saw and felt about Mahalia.
There is a bookish trope that always gives me the ick, when the mc's love interest is dating someone else already and they engage in a flirtationship/emotional affair before finally getting together. It just makes the story feel so icky. Even if
the guy is an asshole it just makes me not like it.
That is the only thing I didn't like about this book.
I do feel like the ending was kinda abrupt, I almost expected there to be more to the story, or more threads tied up, and was surprised when it just ended after the party.
All in all it was a great ready, and I recommend it.

A really CUTE queer coming of age story! It was the best kind of predictable story where you root for the main character. There was a happy ending, funny bits and cute romance. This is black queer joy!!!

This book rated a lot higher for me right up until the sex scene. Sex scenes in YA novels seems wrong to me. Especially as a 30 year old. Reading about minors engaging in this does not sit right with me. An no it has nothing to do with the fact that it is two girls, I love me a sapphic adult romance. I just feel like any sex in YA, if it is needs to happen, which in this case the book would have been fine without it, should at least be fade to black.
