Read for book club #2. Beautifully written and quite devastating. Partway through I actually read the last chapter because I had to know if it was going to end on a hopeful note - lately I'm finding I can't handle purely depressing books. Very glad I read this book.
The Strangers by Katherena Vermette returns to the character of Pheonix from The Break and tells the story of her family over the 5 years following The Break. With that said, The Strangers does stand alone, but I highly recommend reading The Break first to get a full understanding of the background actions that led to this story.
This book is very heavy and highlights racism and broken systems in Canada so it can feel bleak at times, but there are pockets of hope and healing. I fell in love with all these characters and think Vermette does an incredible job of creating connections between the reader and complex and flawed characters. I was heartbroken many times while reading this book but will always read Vermette’s novels. She’s a truly incredible writer and I can’t recommend her work enough!

Speechless. Some of the best writing I've read in my life.
Did not enjoy this as much as the Break. It felt strange that the story followed Phoenix from the previous book but Cedar was the only character whose chapters were written in the first person. I enjoyed Cedar and Phoenix’s chapters the most and wish we could’ve seen stories of their mother and grandmother more through their eyes. A well-written story of how experiences of each generation impact others. I wonder if the author is setting up for a third novel with the characters in university.
