Has a novel ever left you feeling emotionally exhausted after reading it? This one will! Although “The Strangers” is a companion to Vermette’s first novel “The Break”, you can still read this one without having to read the other novel first. Although I prefer “The Break” overall, this novel was still great! The best way to describe it is ‘a gut wrenching emotional rollercoaster’ that highlights many issues affecting Indigenous peoples today. The first chapter of this novel holds nothing back—I only had to read the first page to know that I was going to love this book! This novel is written in a multi-character perspective (3 generations of women) and explores so many important topics including racism, trauma, and love.
If there is one thing to say about Katherena Vermette is that she loves her characters. She so obviously does.
They are never perfect, their lives are never easy, but they are just so loved by the storyteller.
And it gives me hope.
Hope that through this love of the storyteller people whose stories are similar will get to love themselves.
