GIRLS LIKE ME boasts a breezy structure, as its written entirely in verse and transcripts of text messages, but doesn't amount to much other than a fantastical approach to some very serious issues. Dealing with loss of loved ones, homosexuality, bullying, insecurities, step-parent relationships, cancer, and a wealth of other YA issues means that this is at times numbing, but mostly ineffective. Just because there's something here for everyone does not mean that every one will be satisfied. Except the characters in the book, of course. Because there's no issue too severe that can't be ignored in favor of a rousing high school party climax.

The textual intercourse between the two lovebirds was cute, though, Shay is right: the magic does disappear after the two meet.

Can we talk about how toxic Blake was and how because he was “hot” it was excused?

This is a fun light hearted teen rom com. The writing style is poetic and conversation based so it lends itself to a quick easy read. A fun time if your looking for light hearted coming of age content.

I think this is the first time I have ever DNF'd a novel written in verse. The writing here felt so stilted and awkward, like random words were left out of sentences. I kept re-reading bits and doing the "I don't fucking get it" head tilt. I'm sure this will work for some, but it didn't work for me.

I loved this. It was funny, honest, and had some impactful moments. You can't expect it to be more than it is, though. It's straightforward and the plot points aren't that complicated, but you get something amazing when you sink into Shay's words and life. You also can't expect it to be something different. If you go into a novel written in verse expecting it to accomplish the same things prose does, you're going to be disappointed. The verse didn't feel awkward or unnecessary here like it did in the last book I read in this format...I felt like I was reading Shay's poetry journal (with some guest stars and taped in text convos), and I loved the way she expressed herself.
