I enjoyed this simple story. It was interesting to “hear” the thoughts of the heroine who spent her teenage hoods in the East and came back to London society as an adult. Would have enjoyed a longer prologue, telling more on how the h and H got on after marriage but hoping to get some of that in the next book.

The story itself was good, enjoyable and had a bit of intrigue, but I think I would have liked more from it - a bit more awareness early on from Jane, a bit more thrilling danger. Some more clues here and there - we visit the dressmaker from the guide early on but nothing comes of it, no frustration or elation. The scene is just...there.

We have the background story of Hazelwood simmering in the background and it would have been good to see something happen there too - repaired relations, them getting drawn in and learning the kind of man their son truly is. I liked him a lot but just again, wanted a bit more to happen for him.

Their romance is good, really enjoyable - there are some truly lovely scenes between the two and I definitely want to see what else this author has written. It felt believable and well paced, and they didn’t just fall into each other’s arms OR fall victim to a simple misunderstanding which I’m so glad for as I’ve seen too much of that lately.

Overall, I’m giving this a 3/5 purely as for such a tense and mysterious topic I wished there was slightly more actual spying. Give us our handsome lord scoping them in the dead of night on a rooftop, give us Jane sneaking round the family house at night to break into their study, finding something about her father in the process instead of the real way she figures a certain connection out. A lot of things just happened along the way, and our characters were taken along for the ride.

I was a bit unsure of this book when I first dove in but I love the author's voice. She has a beautiful way of describing things and people that it was easy for me to be there in the story with the lovely characters and enjoy it. It's a not too light a read which I like, with a ton of adventure and tension. I read for the HEA and this has it completely. :)
