Barnaby Rudge is the very epitome of [a:Henry James'|159|Henry James|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1468309415p2/159.jpg] "large, loose, baggy monsters", but is still one of my favourite Dickens novels. Be warned - it does take the equivalent of a good 1-2 small, tight, un-baggy novels'-length of preamble before it really gets going, so you do need both patience and a reasonable life expectancy to justify embarking upon this, but it is well worth the investment.

Definitely my least favourite Dickens tale so far. Nothing happens until the last 200 pages and it’s a struggle to get there. I usually tear through his books despite their complexity. Chuck must have been having a bad day. Other than that though, Grip rules and I’m 10/15 on Dickens novels.

I should learn my lesson and read this one chapter at a time, like his readers did. Will try it with the next book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the best written books of all time, and the best written of all of Dicken’s works. It’s got an incredible subtlety to it that paints the most vivid picture of London yet. The prose is splendid, and the techniques used create such a complex thing to unpack. I love the way the branching winding array of characters come together on a single track. I love Barnaby. I loved how grounded this novel felt and what it had to say about the ends of suppression, on both a familial level, and how that reflects on the greater stage, this is one of the best stories to demonstrate a complex power dynamic between the oppressed and the oppressor, the want and the cant-have.

It took me some time to get into this story, but I am glad I stuck with it. It picks up about halfway in, and then I could hardly put the book down. The vivid descriptions of the Gordon Riots are amazing -- worth the whole book by themselves, but I did come to care about the characters, as well, especially poor Barnaby.
