I didn't realize how much I needed a Murtagh book until I read this. I'm so happy to be back in the world of Eragon and to see the aftermath of everything Murtagh went through. It was really interesting to see Murtagh's if/then use of magic, and I loved how different his and Thorn's relationship was in comparison to Eragon and Saphira's! It makes me wonder how Arya and her dragon are doing...

Now to wait impatiently for the next book!!

It was a wonderful stand-alone continuation of Paolini's Inheritance Cycle that focused on Murtagh and his dragon Thorn, and the hardships they faced following the downfall of Galbatorix and the Broddring Empire.

I loved this book so much. It's definitely a difficult read due to the nature of the material, focusing on trauma, healing, inner turmoil, failure, and depression, but Paolini does it so well. To witness it not only through Murtagh's perspective, but Thorn's as well, really helps us understand what they went through when they were under Galbatorix's control. I cried more times than I ever remember crying during a book but it was cathartic to experience those emotions through these beloved characters.

This is definitely upper YA. The themes are on the heavy side. That being said, Murtagh grows so much in this book, I felt deeply for him and Thorne, their mental battles are some of the best written I've ever read. Both of them have different struggles born from the same experiences. I would highly recommend teens who have parents living with mental health diseases read this. It is possible to rise above and survive.
