My favorite horror stories are both sad and spooky. This is an amazing marriage of both.

The way the plot unfolds it really feels like you're with Olivia as she learns about the darkness surrounding Gallant. The main character is easy to love because her main goal is just finding out who she is and what home means. This book starts as a puzzle but the missing pieces are scattered very well throughout the plot and leaves you wanting to find out what happens next. The way Schwabb writes also makes it very easy to visualize everything that is happening and does a great job at setting the proper tone.

This book was very interesting and the fast pace definitely kept me engaged. That being said the book was extremely fast and somewhat short. It was well written and the concept was good, but due to the short length the plot was a little rushed and there was little time for meaningful character development.

Olivia grew up in an orphanage with nothing but her mother's very confusing journal to connect her to anyone else. Unable to speak and surrounded by people unable to sign, she's alone. Even the ghosts, that only she can see, are silent. Then, a letter arrives from a family she never knew she had.

A young adult gothic novel which features a character who struggles within an ableist institution, doesn't needlessly info dump, and doesn't waste time telling the story. Would love to see this as a movie or limited series. Quality storytelling.

The atmosphere of this book is phenomenally done. There are so many moments I would like to quote here, but in short this is a dark and truly haunting book with a good plot driving it and a plethora of horrific truths behind it.

I fell that this is another one from V. E. S. that I will be thinking about for a while.

Started and finished today. I didn't really know what it would be about, except that I've yet to be disappointed by a V.E. Schwab book. And that still stands! Unputdownable. It's like if a Frances Hodgson Burnett and Neil Gaiman book had a thrilling ghost story baby.
