"Dad is a bad man because
a) he gets so cross
b) he orders us around
c) he's a great big bully
"

Finishing this book feels like a huge accomplishment because of how long I've been wanting to read it! It was embarrassingly good, and funny and had a really strong message. I honestly became so attached to Dilly's achievements and breaking away from her abusive husband, protecting not only Beauty, but herself. I was so proud, and happy!

The ending is a little cheesy, and makes me scrunch my toes up with embarrassment but it was enjoyable and reminded me why I love Jacqueline Wilson books. They have meaning in the words, and it's focused on real problems but the way she writes makes it so child friendly and I love that about her books. I'm also glad Wilson didn't write Dilly and Mike together, she just left them as friends which made me happy because Dilly said that she wanted to be on her own for a while, another thing that made me proud. Wilson didn't force the relationship, I loved it.

Wilson was able to tackle some really serious problems in this book, ones that doesn't make children run away crying because it's violent. She tackles bullying and abusive relationships and shows that this is not right and will hopefully stay with children so they can see the warning signs of these problems. It was so beautifully written!

It was great rereading this book after a good few years as I used to read it all the time in school, but I totally forgot how horrible the dad was in it however I still loved reading the book.

I've recently completely run out of space for my books, so have been attempting to wade my way through my collection to find books to donate. It was whilst doing this that I found my copy of 'Cookie', bought aged 10 when first published, that I'd cherished dearly. I had an unrelenting love for Jacqueline Wilson when I was younger and refused to read books that weren't written by her; my adoration and nostalgia meant that as soon as I found Cookie I wanted to re-read it.
It's still a very sweet novel. Our protagonist, Beauty, lives in permanent fear of her unpredictable father. Her situation is worsened by bullying in school. When her father's anger reaches boiling point, Beauty and her Mum decide to start a new life in a seaside village.
Wilson has a wonderful style voice that allowed this book and its slightly more mature themes to be both understandable to my ten-year-old self, yet still enjoyable to me today aged 20. These themes may be dramatic at times, yet aren't intimidating to her younger readers. Beauty goes through notable character growth; she was a protagonist I adored when I was younger, and I still love her to this day.
This book has reignited my love for Wilson and has made me want to go back and visit many more of her brilliant books.

This was decent, if a bit too long- hit close to home for me personally. Cookie was a fun protagonist and the topics discussed were done well and with tact.
