There are plenty of MG mysteries out there, but there aren't a lot of them that involve a dead body and murder. COOP KNOWS THE SCOOP has both. While that may seem a little dark for a children's book, the novel actually strikes the perfect balance between funny and serious. The small-town Southern setting, complete with requisite quirky townsfolk, provides fodder for the former. Coop is a likable hero; his family and friends are also warm, interesting, and sympathetic. As for the plot, it's well-structured, complete with a twist or two that I didn't see coming. While COOP KNOWS THE SCOOP does deal with some shady behavior, it remains upbeat and child-appropriate throughout. I enjoyed the story immensely and found it both engrossing and entertaining.

Thank you Taryn Souders and Sourcebooks for sharing a book to review with the LitReviewCrew!
I absolutely DEVOURED this book! My students love mysteries and I just don't really read a whole lot of them, but after having Taryn in my classroom for an author's visit, I was hooked. It was fun to notice the things she hinted at in her presentations. This will easily be a favorite mystery for all those who love mysteries, especially my 6th graders. It has murder, it has intrigue, it has a lot of red herrings, and a lot of plot twists. I listened to the audio and the narrator was awesome-I would highly recommend.
Three things I loved about this book:
1-Coop and his brain!
2-Small town vibe
3-Focus on research
I hope you check it out!

This was a fun MG mystery! My students love a murder mystery and thus satisfied that craving while still being age appropriate. The characters are lovable and funny. The book covers subjects of family, friendship, and a deceased parent all in developmentally appropriate ways. Would make a great read aloud to see who can identify the killer first :)
Moderate: Death of parent
Minor: Bullying

A great mystery for kids! Loved how the storyline progressed and kept you interested. Neat how all the same details became a part of the murder.
