I needed a book with a rodent on the cover for a challenge, or I never would have picked this up. This is definitely a POV and story that don't age well. And I'm surprised by this famous author - so many lines in this story seemed like just an opportunity to saw naughty words in a book. And it seemed so odd so blame so many things on a 'great big mean mouse' like he's a boogeyman, trying to take away your fun. If you don't like Disney, but all means, don't support them. But stop thinking every bad thing that's happened in the world can be laid at their door.

A quick, if dated, read for Disneyphobes (or Disneyphiles) with a few good appropriately cynical anecdotes.
This is not a 2010 publication; it's an ebook release of a book from 1998. As I read this supposed 2010 book, I kept wondering why on earth Hiaasen didn't have any information from after 1995, so I went looking online, and of course, found the original release date. Wish my public library would stop buying older books that have been repackaged as "new" ebooks.
I love Carl Hiaasen; he's clever and raunchy and satiric, and a great storyteller. His adult novels skewer people who value money or power above everything else; his books for kids show the environmental impact of greed and mismanagement. I was hoping for a good look at how Disney's presence has changed Florida.
And in a limited way, that's what I got, but all the facts and figures are from the mid nineties, and so now nearly 20 years out of date! If you're looking for Hiaasen's wit, go read one of his novels. If you want information on corporate greed, look for a more up-to-date source.

This is a pretty interesting and fast read, full of stories and statistics that shed light on just how much power Disney has and how much it impacts the environment (usually negatively). However you probably have to alreay harbor some cynicism about Disney in order to enjoy it- Hiaasen's tone is probably too passionate, personal, and angry to really convince any lifelong Disney lovers.
Being written in 1998, this book is pretty dated now. I'm really curious how the issues discussed have developed over the last 25 years.

A hilarious yet seemingly truthful take on the history of Disney parks and the takeover of Florida land for commercialization under the brand. The book was published in 1998, so I'm almost positive there has been enough events to warrant another book or two in addition to this one.
