A wide range of interesting tales of Cuba and Cubans. Helped warm me on a cold and rainy day.

A volume of short stories exploring life in Cuba and in the US as an immigrant from Cuba. Not my favorite short story collection, but there were a couple that were really evocative.

  • I do love the writing style and I think there’s a lot of poignant observations and themes covered in these short stories.
  • A lot of the short stories ended a bit too abruptly for me, I was often left thinking there was meant to be more, cutting off kind of unsatisfying.
  • In the collection I would say maybe 2-3 were memorable to me.

Most of these stories focus on the feeling of alienation that people who left Cuba feel, fully belonging neither to the U.S or to Cuba. The last two stories focused on how the physical body can interfere with our own aspirations.

Some of the stories were confusing and hard to follow, others were very good and I wanted them to just continue.
