There is a lot of good stuff in this book, mainly in the prose department, but none of it can make up for the grotesque lack of agency afforded to its ableist, misogynist cardboard cutout of a protagonist. Why you would write a book purporting to denounce the misrepresentation and mistreatment of a people and spend its entirety misrepresenting and mistreating an offensive caricature of one of those people is beyond me. I am so sorry, Oblivia, that you were created to be a misery-porn punching bag and nothing else.

I found this hard to follow, I know that’s part of the point but I did not love it

Wright's style of writing is not usually what I read so I have to make a real conscious effort to just let go and let the beauty wash over me when I read her books. Well worth it. So many layers of complexity and commentary. I'm not sure I'll ever fully get all of them but I'm glad I've extended myself.

Edit: re-read 2023 - listened to it as audiobook and enjoyed it so much. Wright’s writing is like poetry and gorgeous in an auditory medium.

Just not my cup of tea. The sentences weren't coming together with any kind of meaning in my head and I didn't want to slog through something I wasn't going to enjoy
