This is definitely more of a 3.5. It's obvious from the minute go that the author knows exactly what she's talking about. If she didn't write in the intro that she'd been to Antarctica specifically to research this book, it would have been super obvious through the reading. It's also fascinating to read a mystery novel by a geologist because it's SUPER OBVIOUS that she was not in a whole range of humanities and/or creative writing classes. I don't find this to be a negative though, just really interesting to see how this author tackles the classical form of a Mystery Novel.

This is both is and isn't a mystery in the classical sense. Yes, the mysterious death of a person is being solved, but the form - both in pov and structure - is very different from more familiar "mystery novel" forms. I know I'm not being very articulate, but this was really fun to read because it was different than mystery/thriller expectations. I also did quite like the in-depth examples and discussion of how, exactly, scientists and support staff live on Antarctica in the summer season. I would be curious to read more by this author!

The plot probably wasn't all that amazing, but the setting made up for everything. If I had five or six lives instead of just one, I might like to spend one of them doing science in Antarctica. It's worth reading this book just for the representation of that scientific community and the wonders of Antarctica.
