This was the first book I ever read by myself. I was very small, but I remember feeling really excited that I could look at a word and understand it.
I recommend this book to everyone.

This is the very first book I read, astonishing my mother, on April 16, 1982. I still have my copy with her happy inscription noting this historic first and have re-read it umpteen times over the years. In all honesty I read it again today because my Goodreads challenge number was kinda low this year (because reasons) and I just needed one more book to get to my yearly goal of 12. Still my lowest year since I started doing the Goodreads challenge, but like I said, I have reasons.
At any rate, this book is a straight-up classic for children learning to read who like dogs. The illustrations are great.
There's even a lot to like as an adult, like pondering if you'd prefer a party with dogs in the boat or a huge tree-top rager. (A banjo and a checkerboard? Count me in!) Last year I read a feminist revisiting of the poodle with the hat that had me in stitches.
Perhaps I'm biased because this book has a special place in my life, but I'd recommend it to just about anyone. In fact, I've bought a copy for a few new mothers just to make sure their babies get exposed to anthropomorphized canines as soon as possible. :)

If you like dogs, cars, dogs who drive cars, dogs wearing hats, and helicopters, then you will probably love this book. I could read it again and again. In fact, I read it about 2-3 times a day as demanded by the 16-month old tyrant who lives in my house. Or rather he asks for "dog dog vroom" which is close enough.
Weirdly shortened
Edited down from the original so it loses much of its charm and dramatic arc. The drama of "do you like my hat" is absent
