I wanted to like this book and do think it has an intriguing premise, but it fails miserably in execution. I do not think a middle grader could follow the plot, nor would they want to as it becomes incredibly repetitive and needlessly convoluted for a book geared toward a younger age set.

I tried. I tried so many times to get past page 90, I can’t do it. This book is terrible. Don’t waste your time.

I’m not sure what to say about this book. It took me awhile to get into it. It’s a little bit realistic, a little bit spooky, a little bit historical fiction, with a fairly big twist at the end. It’s more about the characters, setting, and story than it is about action. Give this to readers who like- “quirky.”

*I got this book for review for the publisher*

This book surprised me. I was enjoying it but the ending took me off guard. I loved the narrator that we had and how focused on the history of the islands it was. It did have some pacing issues but it was a fun story. I wish the kids character may have been more focused in the story. But the ending I def did not see coming and really eventually want to re-read this book and see how that knowledge effect the story. It was def. a creepier read but one the middle grade students would enjoy. I would def.read more by this autor in the future.

I was really excited to read this book but something just fell short and I couldn't connect to the book the way I had wanted to.

I have tried reading her novels before with no success. I was determined to finish one and the only way I could get through this story was by audio book. The most interesting part is the after part when she talked about her experiences. This book , however , was boring and I had no interest in the characters. For me this story is not memorable at all. I’ll be taking this book to the library as a donation. I can not recommend this book. :(

Beautiful language and an interesting idea, but the choice of narrator made the story very confusing, and the end wasn't very clear. I'm not sure the target audience will understand.

Really... weird. I desperately wanted to love this book with ghosts invested in preserving old houses. But I spent most of the book feeling like I was missing something, not quite understanding what was happening. That said, there were ghosts and historic preservation, and some really nice thoughts about death.

A bit confusing... the little blurb is a bit misleading.

This book made me FEEL THINGS. I think a lot was beautifully written, but a lot was truly confusing nonsense as well. It needs edited about 5 more times.

My biggest problem though comes from the complete writing off of the Native American perspective in this book. Like, they get a paragraph and a half total (not even together!) and then get written off as "oh, they didn't care about whaling and the Nantucket way of life so they didn't need to be ghosts"? For real though? For sometime who uses the term "native" to describe people who have lived in the island for more than a generation, I think she ignores a whole lot of story. Lazy.
