This is not my favorite series from Katee Robert, but I was excited to pick up another installment from this world. "His Lover to Protect" follows Alexis and Luke. Alexis is a broken young woman whose whole world has seemingly imploded. Her mother passed away when Alexis was young because of cervical cancer, and when Alexis is screened for the cancer at 25, she finds that she is at a high risk of dying in the same way as her mother. In an effort to save her life, she chooses to have a life-saving operation, but it leaves her unable to have biological children: something Alexis wants more than anything. Her fiancé left her after she could no longer have children and Alexis's grandfather is outraged that she would choose to save her life and not choose to bear children. Now, Alexis's little sister is pregnant, and Alexis cannot deal, so she goes on a trip to Europe to live out her wildest dreams and find herself again. Luke was a military hero before his accident, and now he is left with a crippling injury and guilt from the day it all went wrong. When his buddy calls him up and asks him to follow Alexis around Europe and keep her safe, Luke asks no questions and catches the next flight out. Will Luke and Alexis find that they have more in common than they think?
This was definitely an emotional read because of all of Alexis's feelings around pregnancy and the horrendous treatment she has received regarding the choice to save her own life. It made me so angry for her. I was taken aback when Luke introduced himself to Alexis and lied to her about who he was. I understand that he did not want to upset Alexis, and he wanted to make sure she felt in control, not like she was being babysat by her friends and family, but after they shared their first night together, I really wish he would have come clean. I really dislike liars. I did enjoy how Luke and Alexis's stories had a lot of parallels. Their lives may be different, but they share a lot of the same trauma, and they are able to bond over them and help each other grow from the adversity they have faced.
Overall, this was an emotional, quick romance about finding yourself again that will pull your heartstrings all while making you smile.
