My kids thought this was a funny book, but they did say that it was totally disgusting.

A silly and a slightly gross retelling of the old nursery rhyme. Gross to parents and adults, but loads of fun to the children screaming "eww." Great for Halloween read a-louds.

Loved Gammel's fun illustrations as always, but seriously...what is the appeal of this cumulative rhyme? Even in it's original form, it's a little macabre when you really think about it. And this one is kind of gross...the teacher eats the classroom pets one by one but draws the line in eating a child?!? Really?!?!

I Know an Old Teacher by Anne Bowen and Stephen Gannell is a retelling of the classic "Old Lady" folk song. The teacher in the story swallows the class pets one by one in a way that is gross but not too gross. Between each verse two kids repeat a refrain about all the pets. My students loved this book and thought it was gross and silly. They couldn't stop laughing.
I recommend this book to readers 5-9.

Not my speed, but I bet primary students would hoot and holler if this was used as a read aloud.
