Tropes: Older Woman/Younger Man, Pet Sidekick
This was absolutely adorable from start to finish, and I laughed out loud multiple times.
Fresh off of her divorce, 40-year-old Nina Askew gets a dog. Not a puppy, but depressed old man Fred, a morose basset hound/beagle mix. who naturally creates a meet-cute between her and her very hot, 30-year-old neighbor, Alex. Can Nina embrace that Alex might want her at 40? And can Alex not get in his own way trying to meet her perceived expectations?
I truly cannot express how cute this book is. It’s got a real homey sitcom feel. The leads have great banter with their friends, and their workplace woes are blended into the story nicely. Even the dated elements make me smile. (Nina and her friend talk about having a crush on Matthew Perry which just tickled me pink.)
I think the pacing on this one is a bit slow, but overall, this was just precious. Definitely worth checking out.
