WOW what an adventure I have been on with this book – just absolutely fantastic from the first to the last page! This is the sequel to The Murderer’s Ape, which I haven’t read, but will 100% be picking up now and if like me you haven’t read the first one, don’t worry, this is completely standalone.
This was an absolute joy to read and if I hadn’t already known this was a children’s book, I don’t think I would have guessed otherwise. Brilliant for both adults and children, the story is told from the point of view of Sally Jones who is an unlikely heroine as she is an ape – yes you did read that correctly!
The writing was just wonderful, completely drawing me in until I felt I was on this adventure with them. Descriptions of places, ships and characters were all so detailed bringing everything to life and with the help of the gorgeous illustrations at the beginning really enhanced the reading experience.
Not only was Sally Jones one of the best characters I have read about, but the plot in The False Rose was also really good. It contained enough mystery and suspense for you as the reader to want to find out what happened. Alongside that we’ve got some sketchy moments with some gangsters, enough action to keep the pace going but also a satisfying conclusion of everything that neither felt forced or over the top.
Overall if you want to get lost in a comforting and enjoyable adventure with an ape to guide you along the way then make sure you read this – you won’t be disappointed!
