I love diverse characters and books that let my daughter learn about different cultures and experiences. This is a great book about a Guatemalan family and their desire for a better life and the struggles they go through. I love books that tell hard stories to children in ways that are age-appropriate.

What begins as a light childhood recollection of life in his family's restaurant La Casita soon turns dark as war comes the his home in Guatemala City, but this isn’t about the war so much as it is about the impact it has on Davico and his older brother psychologically and his family, personally and
professionally, forcing them to close the family restaurant and flee to the US.
