Time has mostly forgotten this story - of little Huldah (nicknamed Brownie) who runs away with her beloved dog, Dick, from a life of misery and into a life which holds love and kindness.

There is a strong moral to the story (it was first published in 1912 and it shows)- the world is simple but it is shown that with a positive attitude and a willingness to help others one will achieve happiness.

I haven't read this story for many years but despite it's simplicity and the different world it presents (we no longer live in a world where runaway waifs would be adopted by kindly old ladies with the kind assistance of the vicar's daughter) and the hardships that Huldah overcomes - it's well worth a look.
