This book was really hard to get through... but in a good way?????

I'm going to be honest, I struggled to get through the first half of this book. It was a FIGHT between me and Mia. This book was so so frustrating it had me yelling at the book during some parts. Mia made some of the worst choices I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing, but it was so rewarding to get through the book.

So, without saying too much. Fight through this book. Kick and scream and fight so that you can get the reward of getting through this book and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Just like these characters, you have to get into the trenches along with them.

Ollie and Mia are so endgame and I can't wait to see their love grow and flourish.

While this book definitely had spice, it was the plot that truly pulled me in. It being a whole new light to "don't judge a book by its cover". Because you honestly never know what made that person who they are or what happened that they think it's the only way.

There is just SOMETHING about characters barely knowing each other, yet unable to stay away from the other right from the beginning. I’m obsessed with this.

The attraction, the chemistry, the dynamic… I fell hard for Mia and Ollie. I don’t think there is any way to explain how, nor why. The same way there isn’t any explanation as to why they happen to be the one for the other. They just are, period.

Before proceeding with this book: don’t expect any kind of moral compass, logic or normalcy. These characters are all kind of fucked up, they’re twisted, traumatized, willingly (or not) morally grey. They’re evolving in a clinical, unusual environment (a special college, taking the form of some kind of mental institution) and there’s no use to try and see the sense of it all. Just go with the flow.

Feel with Ollie, don’t feel with Mia.
The boy who felt everything and the girl who felt nothing.
The boy who wants to make the girl feel again, and the girl who is too scared and traumatized to even remember why she cut her feelings off.

Mia and Ollie are raw, intense, all consuming. I think today’s readers would qualify their relationship as “insta love” but the way I see it, our MCs are just… meant to be. Soulmates. And to be honest, the settings and the plot really made their story unlike any romance I’ve read before.
So yes, granted, it WAS a bit cheesy at times. The “I love you”s came rather quickly, especially considering Mia’s backstory. But I didn’t mind it that much, and was still invested in their story.

Nicole’s writing has a poetic, colorful and beautiful aspect to it that I absolutely love. Stay With Me is definitely more character driven than plot driven, and the writing does an amazing job at creating this very specific atmosphere— you’re a part of Mia’s journey and dive into her ups and downs, her epiphanies and crises... The characters’ development throughout this first book is already really interesting and I’m eager to see where book 2 and 3 will be taking me.
Mental health, trauma, recovery and mental illness were, paradoxically, depicted in both a blunt way and with deliberate care.

My only complaints would be regarding the speed of Mia’s breakthrough (occurs within a month, after 10 years of coping mechanisms), as well as some drama scene between the students/patients that could have been avoided if the MCs had just… walked away.

All in all, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical at the beginning but Stay With Me is absolutely unique. It is, however, not for everyone.

Now, after that ending?! I need to pick up the next volume to find out what’s going to happen, and I just know Mia and Ollie are going to put me through so. much. pain.

4.5 stars!
